November 2023 – a month that will forever be etched in my memory. I had the unique privilege of visiting Brunei, a small, lesser-known kingdom tucked away on the island of Borneo. What began as a visit to see my long time friend and her family turned into a beautiful adventure that shattered every preconceived notion I had about this enigmatic country.

The Unexpected Journey

I first met my friend back in London in 2013 when we both worked at the same job, and over the years, our friendship blossomed alongside that of another colleague who eventually returned to Spain. When my friend moved back to Brunei after completing her degree, I had no idea when I’d see her again. Plans to attend her wedding in 2020 were disrupted by COVID, and though she still married and started a family with two kids, it wasn’t until 2023 that I had the chance to visit.

You see, Brunei wasn’t exactly on my travel radar. My only experience was a brief stopover at their airport, which felt like landing in the heart of a jungle. But let me tell you, this tiny nation completely exceeded my expectations.

Though I didn’t get to tour an open house, my friend told me that some homes welcome tourists to experience daily life in the village. Next time, I’ll definitely be going back for that.

If you’re a foodie (and even if you’re not!), Brunei’s culinary scene will blow you away. One night, we dined at Kaizen Sushi, a riverside restaurant that offers some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever tasted. We ordered everything—sushi, oysters, prawns, and scallops—and the cost for 7 people, including drinks and dessert, was an astonishing $160 BND (about $190 AUD). In Australia, that would have easily cost three times the price, so needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. Delicious food and stunning river views—what more could you ask for?

Bruneian Hospitality: A Glimpse into Family Life

I had the privilege of experiencing Brunei’s unparalleled hospitality firsthand when my friend invited me to her family’s home. Brunei’s culture places a strong emphasis on family, and it’s quite common for female children to live with their parents even after marriage. My friend, the fourth of ten children, lives in a home with her parents that resembles a Beverly Hills mansion—grand double gates, marble staircases, chandeliers, and expansive dining rooms. What truly blew me away, though, was the closeness of her extended family, with her aunts, uncles, and cousins living just down the street in similarly luxurious homes. It’s a perfect example of the deep sense of family and community in Brunei.

Her parents welcomed me with open arms, and I was humbled by their generosity. They insisted that I should have stayed with them rather than at a hotel, offering me a guest room for my next visit. They even gave me gifts as a token of appreciation. This kind of genuine hospitality, often understated in Brunei’s quieter reputation, is something that I’ll never forget.

I stayed at the Aga Reef Resort, which was nothing short of a dream come true. The resort is nestled near Lalomanu Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Samoa. Just a short drive away from the beach, the resort offers breathtaking views, seclusion, and tranquility, making it the perfect place to kick back and relax.

Aga Reef Resort was everything I hoped for and more. The highlight? The resort features two gorgeous pools and a unique rockpool at the end of its boardwalk. What made this rockpool even more magical was that it’s shared only with starfish—yes, you read that right. It felt like something straight out of a dream. Surrounded by lush mountains and dense jungle, the setting was so peaceful that it felt like a world away from everyday life.

Discovering Samoa’s Natural Beauty

Though the resort was a paradise in itself, I couldn’t leave Samoa without exploring some of the island’s breathtaking natural sights. For that, I had the pleasure of being guided by Norah da Explorer, a local travel guide who made my trip even more special. Norah took me to some of the most beautiful and unique places Samoa has to offer.

First up was To Sua Ocean Trench, an extraordinary natural swimming hole that you access by a steep staircase. Located on private property, the owners generously allow visitors to experience its stunning beauty for a small fee. The water was crystal-clear, and swimming here felt like being in a hidden oasis.

Next, we visited Togitogiga Waterfall, a tranquil spot perfect for swimming and relaxing. The waterfall cascades into a serene pool, surrounded by lush greenery—perfect for a cooling dip after a hot day. Norah also showed me Piula Cave, a fascinating underground cave with a freshwater spring where you can swim, and Taufua Beach, a pristine stretch of coastline where the water is so blue, you’ll think you’ve stepped into a postcard.

What made the tour even more memorable was Norah’s thoughtful gesture—she brought along Panikeke, a traditional Samoan pancake, for me to try. Warm, sweet, and absolutely delicious, it was a perfect snack after exploring these stunning spots.

A Few Practical Tips

One of the things that stands out about Samoa is its authenticity, and that comes with a few quirks to keep in mind. If you plan to venture outside of the capital, Apia, like I did, make sure to take cash with you. I learned this when I was checking into Aga Reef Resort. The couple ahead of me in line asked the receptionist where the nearest ATM was, and she looked at them with a blank expression. “Oh... back in Apia, about an hour and a half away... near the airport,” she replied. The couple looked horrified, and I couldn’t help but feel pleased with myself having already prepared for this. While hotels, resorts, and most restaurants accept card payments, smaller shops and local markets often don’t. So, make sure you’re prepared.

Coming directly from the mainland U.S., the difference was striking — Puerto Rican coffee is rich, smooth, and full of flavor. It’s not just a morning ritual here; it’s a cultural experience. If you’re a coffee lover, I recommend seeking out local cafés or even taking a coffee plantation tour in the mountains.

And of course, my sweet tooth couldn’t resist pairing that coffee with something indulgent. One of my favorite discoveries was Sweet Ann Cakes, just a short walk from my apartment in Isla Verde. Imagine every kind of cake you could dream of — all delicious, beautifully made, and surprisingly affordable. It quickly became my go-to coffee and cake stop during my stay.

Old San Juan: History by the Sea

The Old City of San Juan is a step back in time with its colorful Spanish colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and fortress walls. A highlight for me was Castillo San Cristóbal, one of the largest Spanish forts in the Americas. Standing on its ramparts, I was mesmerized by the sight and sound of waves crashing against the cliffs below.

A short drive from San Juan takes you to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. The greenery here is surreal, and the views from Yokahu Tower stretch endlessly across the canopy to the ocean.

By day, La Placita de Santurce is a bustling farmer’s market. By night, it transforms into one of the island’s liveliest street parties. With salsa music energizing one side and reggae and Caribbean beats pulsing from the other, the square becomes an open-air nightclub. People dance in the streets, sip on mojitos, and the energy is absolutely infectious.

Moʻorea, French Polynesia: My Slice of Paradise

In October 2025, I set off on a trip that turned out to be nothing short of magical — the lush, turquoise wonderland of Moʻorea, French Polynesia. Often overshadowed by its glamorous neighbor Tahiti, Moʻorea is pure perfection: laid-back, breathtakingly beautiful, and full of warm, welcoming people.

Getting There: The Ferry to Paradise

The journey began with a ferry ride from Tahiti to Moʻorea, which cost around $20 AUD one way. The trip only takes about 30 minutes, but as you approach Moʻorea and see the emerald peaks rise dramatically from the sea, you realize you’re heading somewhere truly special.

Once I arrived, I picked up my car from Good Deal Rentals. The owner, Louise, was incredibly kind — she spent nearly half an hour going through a map of the island, circling all the best things to see, hidden viewpoints, and local tips. It felt more like chatting with a friend than doing a rental handover. You’d never get this level of personal service from a big-name rental company!

Where I Stayed: Moorea Reef Bungalows

I checked into Moorea Reef Bungalows, and honestly — wow. The place is breathtaking. My villa had its own private pool, surrounded by beautifully kept tropical gardens. Every morning, breakfast was served on the terrace with fresh fruit, pastries, and coffee, all while overlooking the ocean. The peacefulness of those mornings — just the sound of birds and the waves beyond — was pure bliss.

The staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful; they made me feel completely at home.

Driving Around the Island

Moʻorea is 63 km around, and I can’t recommend the drive enough. It takes about 1.5 hours without stops, but trust me — you’ll stop plenty. The scenery is jaw-dropping: jungle-covered peaks, dramatic cliffs, and endless ocean views. I found myself pulling over again and again just to snap photos.

Sweet Stops: Lycee Agricole

One of my favorite stops was Lycée Agricole, a small agricultural school and farm that sells homemade jams, ice creams, and juices. They even offer free jam tastings, and the flavors are truly unique — think pineapple & vanilla or pineapple & coconut.

I couldn’t resist trying the Taro and Vanilla ice cream, and it was absolutely delicious. Creamy, subtly sweet, and totally tropical.

A Delicious Discovery: AROA Chocolate & Coffee Farm

The best tour I’ve ever taken was at AROA Chocolate Farm, run by the passionate owner Justin. He grows cacao, coffee, and a variety of tropical fruits, all organically.

Justin’s “tree-to-bar” tour is a must — he walks you through every step of the process, from growing and harvesting to fermenting and crafting chocolate by hand. He has a real gift for storytelling, making the tour not just educational but personal and fascinating. And of course, you get to taste the chocolate and coffee at the end — rich, flavorful, and unlike anything you’ll find in a store.

The Food: Fresh, Flavorful, and Generous

Moʻorea’s food scene completely blew me away. Tuna is the star ingredient here, and it’s as fresh as it gets.

One of my favorite meals was at Snack Mahana, where I had the Chaud-Froid de Thon (seared tuna) — beautifully cooked, bursting with flavor, and served in portions so generous I could barely finish it!

Another must-try dish is Poisson Cru — raw tuna marinated in coconut milk and lime. It’s simple, refreshing, and absolutely delicious.

Rotui Juice Factory & Manutea Rum Distillery

Another highlight was visiting the Rotui Juice Factory and Manutea Distillery. Rotui is the island’s famous juice brand, and their pineapple juice is legendary. The distillery also produces Manutea rum, made from local sugarcane.

You can take a guided tour and tasting, learning about how the rum is made and the history behind it. Of course, I couldn’t leave empty-handed — I bought a 6-pack of mini 30ml rums so I could try all the flavors (they’re adorable, but I doubt they’ll last long!).

Beaches, Bays & Natural Wonders

Moʻorea’s beaches and bays are the kind you see on postcards — crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, and a backdrop of towering green peaks.

Two spots you absolutely shouldn’t miss:

• Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay — perfect for photos, especially in the morning light.

• Te Fare Natura L’ecomusée — a small but fascinating natural science museum near Opunohu Bay, where you can learn about beekeeping, marine life, and native plants.

• Plage de Taʻahiamanu – calm waters, nearby reefs, and a lovely grassy area with shade (just be mindful of falling coconuts!).
